webOS Auto 2.0 is the second official release of webOS Auto that focuses on delivering enhanced in-car experience with multi-display support for in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) system that offers consistent and seamless UI/UX. webOS Auto has incorporated aggregated services provisioning that helps carmakers care free from the bane of bringing all necessary services and content together.
webOS Auto also supports co-existence model with carmakers’ own systems on a single ECU. This consolidation is accomplished by a single SoC with a virtualization layer that can power the carmaker’s existing system such as cluster HMI as well as webOS Auto for IVI system.
Architecture at a Glance
The platform architecture is mainly divided into two partitions: webOS Auto and vendor specific parts. In addition to the defined boundary of webOS Auto components, the platform can be extended with vendor specific features that reflect automotive manufacturers’ own design and implementation.
webOS Auto part is a set of platform services and framework extensions developed in addition to the webOS reference platform in order to support the automotive needs. Most components under this partition are provided as built-in, and some specific components can be customized to the vendor needs.
Vendor specific part specifies the software components that are highly specific to each automotive manufacturer and depend on the platform design and implementation. By using the guidance provided by webOS Auto including reference UI/UX and guidelines, automotive manufacturers can easily create their own services and integrate them with their existing platform. Furthermore, the webOS platform’s flexible and pluggable architecture allows 3rd party services and applications to be easily deployed.
Personalized Multi Display Support on a Single SoC
Powered by a single system-on-a-chip (SoC), webOS Auto has the capability of multi-display support that enables the out-of-the-box experience for any type of IVI system. Seamless UI/UX context switching between and among display panels further improves customer satisfaction. Multi user profile support enables customized services and experience for each individual. Even more, each display can serve different content independently from other displays with individual authentication and profile management.
Strengthened Web Based Content Services
webOS Auto has strengthened web-based content services by supporting various streaming formats, codecs and DRM protected media content. Widevine DRM L1 (H/W) integrated into the webOS Auto’s media framework allows web apps to play DRM protected content with high quality. webOS Auto also features various content provider (CP) services through which streaming media content is available with a web-app based player.
Differentiated Aggregated Services and AppStore
Carmakers can fetch services and content they are in need of for their platform out of webOS Auto’s rich and fully integrated ecosystem profiles. These are offered through webOS Auto Cloud where a number of services and content are available, such as entertainment, concierge and voice control from various CPs and service providers (SP) as well as profile information and device provisioning. This significantly reduces carmakers’ engineering effort and time to put such a complicated set of services in place with guaranteed functionality. In addition, carmakers can leverage webOS Auto’s app ecosystem to launch their own app store that gets rid of the hassle of building and maintaining the system on their own.
Enhanced Security and FOTA
Platform security technologies include hardware based encryption key, user authentication, full disk encryption, SMACK implementation, etc. that all impose tight security protection against security threats and vulnerabilities. Periodic patches and SW updates are provided by using FOTA to safeguard the system in a holistic way. webOS Auto continuously responds to the latest industry regulations and standards for vehicle security.
